To improve your chances of getting hired in that school, follow the outline below.

  3. RECEIVER’S ADDRESS
  4. SALUTATION
  5. TITLE OR HEADING

  9. CLOSING REMARK
  10. SIGNATURE
  11. WRITER’S NAME

1. Writer’s Address

This is your house address, written first and at the top right corner of your page.

18, Iwo Road,
Apata, Ibadan,
Oyo State.

2. Date

Write that day’s date under your address, still at the top right corner.

3rd April, 2026.

3. Receiver’s address

Write this under the date but at the left corner of your page.

The Principal,
XYZ Secondary School,
Ibadan, Oyo State.

4. Salutation

Write this under the receiver’s address, and according to the gender of the receiver.

Use ‘Sir‘ (for a man), ‘Madam‘ (for a woman) and ‘Sir/Madam‘ (when the gender is unknown).

   Dear Sir/Madam,

5. Title or heading

Write this in CAPITAL LETTERS, under the salutation. It says the exact position you are applying for.

APPLICATION FOR THE POSITION OF SECONDARY SCHOOL ENGLISH TEACHER

6. Introduction

Write this under the title, stating (in full sentence) what you are applying for and how you saw the vacancy.

I am writing to apply for the position of Secondary School English Teacher at XYZ Secondary School, as advertised.

7. Body paragraphs

  • Use 1st paragraph to state your qualification(s) and experience.
I hold a Bachelor's degree in English Education and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE). I have four years of teaching experience at ABC Secondary School, where I taught English Language and Literature-in-English at both junior and senior levels.
  • Use 2nd paragraph to express your skill(s) and teaching methods.
I am skilled in lesson planning, classroom management and the use of modern teaching strategies to improve students' academic performance. I also prepare students for external examinations and encourage critical thinking, effective communication and good study habits.
  • Use 3rd paragraph to emphasize your passion and competence.
I am passionate about education and commited to maintaining high academic and moral standards. I believe my qualifications, experience and dedication will help me make a positive contribution to your school.

8. Conclusion

Mention your CV, appreciate their time and expect feedback.

Attached to this letter are my Curriculum Vitae and copies of my qualifications. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to your response.

9. Closing Remark

Write this under the conclusion and at the right corner of your page.
