How to write Writer’s Address in WAEC and NECO

The writer’s address in WAEC letter is either your house or school address.

Writer’s address is the first part of your letter in WAEC and it is written at the top-right corner of the page.

Writing writer’s address in WAEC

  • HOUSE NUMBER
  • STREET NAME
  • COMMUNITY
  • TOWN / CITY
  • LOCAL GOVERNMENT
  • STATE / PROVINCE
  • YOUR COUNTRY

1. House number

(1.1) Write in figures, capitalize any letter and end with a comma if your house has a number.

31F,

(1.2) If your house does not have a number, describe its position with a popular place using a preposition.

Beside MTN Branch Office,

(1.3) If you are writing on behalf of your school, use only your school’s name (without preposition or number).

2. Street name

That house is in a street.

  • Write the street’s name after your house number (on the same line).
  • Capitalize the first letter of each word.
  • End with a comma.

31F, Sam Oh Street,

Skip this second step if you used style (1.2) and (1.3) under house number.

3. Community

That street is in an area or a community.

  • Write the area or community under your house number and street.
  • Capitalize the first letter of each word.
  • End with a comma.

31F, Sam Oh Street,

Exam Ministry,

Skip this third step too if you used style (1.2) and (1.3) under house number.

4. Town or city

That community is in a town or city.

  • Write that town or city under the community.
  • Capitalize the first letter of each word.
  • End with a comma.

Continue from this step if you used style (1.2) and (1.3) under house number.

  • Abagana Secondary School,

5. Local Government

That town or city is in a local government.

  • Write the local government under the town or city.
  • Capitalize the first letter of each word.
  • End with a comma.
  • 31F, Sam Oh Street,
  • Exam Ministry,
  • Morogbo,
  • Badagry,

OR

  • Abagana Secondary School,
  • Morogbo,
  • Badagry,

6. State or province

That local government is in a state.

  • Write the state or province under the local government.
  • Capitalize the first letter of each word.
  • End with full-stop if it is to someone in the same country as you.
  • 31F, Sam Oh Street,
  • Exam Ministry,
  • Morogbo,
  • Badagry,
  • Lagos State.

OR

  • Abagana Secondary School,
  • Morogbo,
  • Badagry,
  • Lagos State.

If it is to someone in another country, end the State with a comma and include your country.

7. Your country

Some locations have the same name in different countries like (Lagos in Nigeria, Lagos in Portugal, Lagos in Greece, etc.)

This can be confusing to a receiver abroad.

So, once the receiver is in another country, end your writer’s address in WAEC with the country you are writing from.

  • Write the country under the state.
  • Capitalize the first letter of each word.
  • End the state with a comma while the country takes the full-stop.
  • 31F, Sam Oh Street,
  • Exam Ministry,
  • Morogbo,
  • Badagry,
  • Lagos State,
  • Nigeria.
  • Abagana Secondary School,
  • Morogbo,

Extra tip on writer’s address in WAEC letter

Compress two items into one line if the space won’t break any word apart.
