1. Informal letter

This type of letter is written to someone you know very well or have a personal relationship with.

The person (or receiver of your letter) is usually a family member or close friend.

Example.

2. Formal letter

This is a letter to an office or someone in an official position (whether you know the person or not).

The person (or receiver of your letter) is usually in a position of authority higher than yours or even lower but in an official setting.

Example

3. Semi-formal letter

This type of letter is written to someone you know (maybe, quite well) but who do not have a personal relationship with.
