Idioms – Definition and Examples

An idiom is a phrase or an expression with a figurative meaning rather than a literal meaning.

Hence.

It is difficult to understand an idiom by just interpreting it verbatim (word-for-word).

Idioms are different from proverbs.

Examples of Idiom

A penny for your thought

To ask someone what they are thinking about.

Break the ice

To start a conversation.

Cost an arm and a leg

Very expensive.

Jump on the bandwagon

To join popular trends.

Once in a bluemoon

Very rare.

Raining cats and dogs

Raining heavily.

Take something with a grain of salt

To be doubtful or unserious about something.

Under the weather

Feeling sick.

When pigs fly

Something that would never happen .

Don’t cry over spilled milk

Advice against dwelling on past mistakes.

A dime a dozen

Something common or easily obtained.

A slap on the wrist

A gentle or mild punishment.

A stitch in time saves nine

Dealing with problems early prevents them from get worse.
