Consonant Sound /ð/

Reviewed in August Comment First

Hello Scholar,

Welcome to the simplest lesson on voiced consonant sound /ð/ with its pronunciation, word examples and questions for you to practice.

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Pronounce voiceless consonant sound /ð/ correctly.
  • Give examples of words with consonant sound /ð/.
  • Identify consonant /ð/ sound in words.

Voiced consonant /ð/

Consonant /ð/ sound is produced by putting the TIP of your tongue between your front teeth and pushing air out through your mouth while vibrating your vocal cord.

When done right, /θ/ sounds like a phone vibrating on a table.

It is pronounced with the same tongue and lips placement as in voiceless CONSONANT SOUND /θ/ but /ð/ is “voiced”.

So there is a vibration in your throat when you pronounce it.

The audio may sound like /v/ but it isn’t.

Just put your tongue between your front teeth and push air out while intentionally vibrating your vocal cord.

-th-bathe
breathe
clothe
father
though

NOTICE: the /ð/ sound is mostly found in words with -the– but /θ/ is in words with -th-.
