What is an adjunct?

An adjunct is a word or phrase that functions as an adverb in a sentence (i.e.) expressing time, place, manner, etc.

EXAMPLES:

  • at noon
  • happily
  • like an angel

What is a disjunct?

A disjunct is a word or phrase loosely joined to a sentence which expresses the mood of the speaker or writer.

EXAMPLES:

  • nevertheless
  • on the contrary
  • despite
  • notwithstanding
  • however

What is a conjunct?

A conjunct is a word or phrase that indicates connection between two sentences.

EXAMPLES:

  • firstly
  • however
  • in addition to
  • therefore

Key points

Disjunct and Conjunct are part of Adjunct.

All are adverbs or adverbials.

They are never an important part of a sentence but optional extras (can be removed without affect the sentence negatively).
