- WRITE YOUR HOUSE ADDRESS.
What is writer’s address of a letter in WAEC?
Writer’s address is the address of the letter writer – who, in this case, is YOU.
Once you are writing a letter, your current house location becomes the writer’s address.
Writing the writer’s address in WAEC letter
The writer’s address is the FIRST PART of your letter in WAEC and it is written at the top-right corner of your writing page.
Its structure is as follows.
1. Start with House number
Many houses in every street are given a unique number written on a part of the house wall outside .
If your house does NOT have a number, use any random number in your WAEC , NECO or GCE to avoid penalties.
Writing your house number
- Write in figures.
- Capitalize any letter(s).
- End it with a comma.
EXAMPLE.
- 31F,
House numbers are for specificity but houses around a landmark may not need a house number because the popularity of that landmark is enough specificity.
In such case.
Use a preposition to describe the position of your house in relation to that landmark.
EXAMPLE.
- Beside Abagana Secondary School,
And if you are writing on behalf of the landmark, use the landmark without preposition.
EXAMPLE.
- Abagana Secondary School,
2. Include the Street name
Your house is situated inside a street.
So.
What is the name of that street?
Writing the street name
- Write it (on the same line) after your house number.
- Capitalize the first letter of each word.
- End it with another comma.
EXAMPLE.
- 31F, Sam Oh Street,
If you used any of the “landmark” approach, skip this 2nd step because the landmark is already more popular than the street.
3. Add the Community
Your street exist within a given area, locality or community. This can even be the nearest popular bus-stop.
In any case, what is the name?
Writing your community
- Write it (on the next line) under your house number and street.
- Capitalize the first letter of each word.
- End it with another comma.
EXAMPLE.
- 31F, Sam Oh Street,
- Exam Ministry,
If you wrote with or on behalf of a landmark, skip this 3rd step too for the same reason you skipped the 2nd.
4. Next is the Town or City
Where can that area, bus-stop or community be found?
It is usually within a town or city whose name is more well-known.
Writing the town/city
- Write it (on the next line) under the community.
- Capitalize the first letter of each word.
- End it with another comma.
EXAMPLE.
- 31F, Sam Oh Street,
- Exam Ministry,
- Morogbo,
Resume your addressing here if you are writing with or for any landmark.
EXAMPLE.
- Abagana Secondary School,
- Morogbo,
5. Then, the Local Government
Which local government area does that town or city exist in?
Writing the local government
- Write it (on the next line) under the town or city.
- Capitalize the first letter of each word.
- End it with another comma.
EXAMPLE.
- 31F, Sam Oh Street,
- Exam Ministry,
- Morogbo,
- Badagry,
Do the same for the address with or for a landmark.
EXAMPLE.
- Abagana Secondary School,
- Morogbo,
- Badagry,
6. And the State
In which state in that local government found?
Writing the state
- Write it (on the next line) under the local government.
- Capitalize the first letter of each word.
- End it with a full stop when writing to someone in the same country as you.
EXAMPLE (1).
- 31F, Sam Oh Street,
- Exam Ministry,
- Morogbo,
- Badagry,
- Lagos State.
EXAMPLE (2).
- Abagana Secondary School,
- Morogbo,
- Badagry,
- Lagos State.
But when writing to someone abroad (in another country), end the State with a comma and…
7. Indicate the Country
This helps to specify (to the foreigner) the country in which that state (you are writing from) is located.
Some locations have the same name in different countries like (Lagos, Nigeria; Lagos, Portugal; Lagos, Greece, etc.) which can be confusing in an international letter if the particular country is not specified.
So.
When writing to someone abroad, end your address with the country you are writing from.
Writing the country
- Write it (on the next line) under the state.
- Capitalize the first letter of each word.
- Now end the State with a comma while the country takes the full stop.
EXAMPLE (1).
- 31F, Sam Oh Street,
- Exam Ministry,
- Morogbo,
- Badagry,
- Lagos State,
- Nigeria.
- Abagana Secondary School,
- Morogbo,
- Badagry,
- Lagos,
- Nigeria.
Extra tip on writer’s address
You can compress two items into one line if the space permits without breaking any word into the next line.
- 31F, Sam Oh Street,
- Exam Ministry, Morogbo,
- Badagry, Lagos State.
Summary
Can you see the arrangement from the most specific “house number” / landmark to a generally known “state” or “country”?
The writer’s address is written from the specific (top) to the general (bottom) in a way that can be followed from bottom to top.
In other words.
If someone (in Nigeria) wants to visit me via this address:
- 31F, Sam Oh Street,
- Exam Ministry,
- Morogbo,
- Badagry,
- Lagos State.
The person needs to first be in LAGOS STATE, then find their way to BADAGRY, stop at MOROGBO, locate EXAM MINISTRY, enter SAM OH STREET and find house 31F.
So.
After writing your address, confirm if it can be followed from the bottom to the top.
