Writing the Salutation of a Semi-Formal Letter in WAEC | NECO | GCE

What is salutation in semi-formal letter?

Salutation is a very short greeting (three words) written under the WRITER’S ADDRESS, but at the left side of your writing page before THE TITLE.

It is important to confirm the name and title of your recipient or receiver before saluting him/her.

How to write the salutation of a semi-formal letter in WAEC

After.

  • THE WRITER’S ADDRESS.
  • THE DATE.

The salutation is the 3RD part of a SEMI-FORMAL LETTER IN WAEC.

It is written immediately under the writer’s address at the left-side of your writing page but with an indentation.

An indentation is that little distance from your page margin to the first word on a line.

The salutation of a semi-formal letter in WAEC, NECO or GCE is structured as follows.

1. Start with “Dear”

EXAMPLE.

  • Dear

2. Next is their title

You have three methods of saluting the receiver in an informal letter.

Saluting a male recipient

Use “Mr” when writing to a male recipient.

EXAMPLE (1).

  • Dear Mr

Saluting a female recipient

Use “Mrs” (married) or “Miss” (unmarried) in your salutation to a female recipient.

EXAMPLE (2).

  • Dear Mrs
  • Dear Miss

Saluting non-gender specific titles

Abbreviate the title appropriately.

EXAMPLE (3).

  • Dear Dr
  • Dear Barr.
  • Dear Prof.
  • Etc.

3. Include their last name

The last name is the surname (also called: family name).

EXAMPLES.

  • Dear Mr Johnson
  • Dear Miss Johnson
  • Dear Prof. Johnson

4. End with a comma

A comma must end any of the title methods you choose to use.

EXAMPLES.

  • Dear Mr Johnson,
  • Dear Miss Johnson,
  • Dear Prof. Johnson,
