At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • EXPLAIN RECEIVER’S ADDRESS IN FORMAL LETTER.
  • LIST THE STEPS FOR WRITING THE RECEIVER’S ADDRESS OF A FORMAL LETTER IN WAEC.
  • WRITE A RECEIVER’S ADDRESS.

What is receiver’s address of a formal letter in WAEC?

The receiver’s address is the address of the person you are writing that letter to.

The recipient is always an office or a position and the location of that office or position makes up the receiver’s address of a letter.

Writing the receiver’s address in WAEC formal letter

After.

  1. THE WRITER’S ADDRESS.
  1. AND THE DATE.

The receiver’s address is the 3RD part of a FORMAL LETTER IN WAEC and it is written under the date but at the left-side of your writing page.

Its structure is as follows.

1. Start with the position

Formal letter is written to an official position.

Your intended receiver of that letter is the same person in that official position.

So start with the official position of your intended receiver.

Writing the position

  • Start with article, “The”.
  • Write the official position.
  • End it with a comma.

EXAMPLE.

  • The Minister,

You can include any adjective that shows more respect in describing the receiver’s position or office.

EXAMPLE.

  • The Honourable Minister,
  • The Executive Minister,
  • Etc.

2. Insert their Place of Work

That their position or office is held in a particular organisation or jurisdiction.

So.

What is the name of that place of work?

Writing their place of work

  • Write it (on the next line) under their position or office.
  • Capitalize the first letter of each word.
  • End it with another comma.

EXAMPLE.

  • The Honourable Minister,
  • Federal Ministry of Education,

3. Next is the Town or City

Where is that their place of work located?

Usually within a well-known town or city.

Writing the town/city

  • Write it (on the next line) under their place of work.
  • Capitalize the first letter of each word.
  • End it with another comma.

EXAMPLE.

  • The Honourable Minister,
  • Federal Ministry of Education,
  • Phase III,

4. Then the State or Territory

In which state or territory is that town or city found?

Writing the state or territory

  • Write it (on the next line) under the town or city.
  • Capitalize the first letter of each word.
  • End it with a full stop.

EXAMPLE.

  • The Honourable Minister,
  • Federal Ministry of Education,
  • Phase III,
  • Abuja.

Extra tip on receiver’s address

Four lines is enough for the receiver’s address of a formal letter in WAEC, NECO or GCE.

In a case of a longer address,

Compress two items into one line if the space permits without breaking any word into the next line.

  • The Honourable Minister,
  • Federal Ministry of Education,
  • Secretarial Complex, Phase III,
  • Abuja.

Summary

Can you see the arrangement from the most specific “position / office” to a generally known “state” or “territory”?

The receiver’s address is written from the specific (top) to the general (bottom) in a way that can be followed from bottom to top.

In other words.

If someone wants to visit the Minister of Education via this address:

  • The Honourable Minister,
  • Federal Ministry of Education,
  • Secretarial Complex,
  • Phase III, Abuja.

The person needs to first be in ABUJA, then find their way to PHASE III, stop at SECRETARIAL COMPLEX, locate FEDERAL MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, humbly ask for Honourable Minister.

So.

After writing your address, confirm if it can be followed from the bottom to the top.
