Welcome to the simplest lesson on the nominalization of adjectives with definition, examples and questions for you to practice.

At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Define nominalization.
  • Explain how to convert adjectives to nouns.
  • Give atleast 3 examples and their noun forms.

Nominalization of adjectives

“Nominalization” comes from the word “nominal” which means “noun”.

Hence, nominalization of adjectives is the conversion of adjectives to nouns.

Remember…

An ADJECTIVE describes a noun or pronoun.

  • She has a MUSICAL instrument.

The “musical” (adjective) describes the kind of “instrument” (noun).

A NOUN is any name.

  • She plays MUSIC.

“Music” is the name (noun) of what she plays.

How to nominalize Adjectives to Nouns

  • Get the adjective.
  • Think of a noun with more similar spelling and whose meaning is related to the adjective.
  • Use the noun in a sentence to confirm.
