“Sounds” are different from alphabets. There are 26 alphabets [21 consonants + 5 vowels] but there are 44 sounds in English.

How many CONSONANT SOUNDS are there in English?

Out of the 44 sounds in English Language, 20 are VOWEL SOUNDS. Which means the remaining 24 are consonant sounds.

So there are 24 CONSONANT SOUNDS in English which are easily divided into 2 parts:–

  • Voiced consonant sounds 
  • Unvoiced / voiceless consonant sounds

What are the voiced consonant sounds?

Voiced consonant sounds vibrate your vocal cord when pronounced. This vibration can be felt on your throat.

There are fifteen (15) voiced consonant sounds in English.

While voiced consonant sounds vibrate your vocal cord when pronounced, voiceless consonant sounds DO NOT.

There are nine (9) voiceless or unvoiced consonant sounds in English.
